Part of losing a bet is paying up for it afterwards, and Santiago Garcia knows that. One day after the final test match of the season in Teistungen, "Santi" paid up his lost wager on the Platz 11 grounds at Weser Stadium. The left back barbecued for representatives of three Werder fan clubs and decked out the meal with a real Argentinean buffet.
Last December, Garcia made a bet with members of the fan clubs "Abfahrt Arsten", "Arbeitskreis Grün-Weiß" and "Ahoi-Crew" that Werder would not lose the match at Hertha Berlin. Back then, Garcia's brother Manuel was in the Werder guest block of fans. But despite the brotherly support and goals by Nils Petersen and Aaron Hunt, Werder lost 3-2 in the German capital. Garcia's message to the fan club members was quick: "Once the weather gets better, I will get out the grill gear!"
"Santi" and his girlfriend Carla and another friend started up the grill Saturday afternoon and the Green-Whites' clubhouse supplied salads and drinks at the Platz 11 grounds at Weser Stadium. There was plenty of interest considering some great food and a real Bremen fan favourite. In addition to autographs with personal messages, Garcia also spent a lot of time having his picture taken and holding conversations. The main topic was of course the German Cup final on the evening. "I think that Dortmund will win. They are just in better form at the moment," said Garcia.
While opinions differed about favourites for the cup, everybody agreed that Garcia's grill skills are top notch. So, what about re-upping the bet for next season? "Of course, but then for all fans," joked Garcia, who was then happy that nobody had heard his remark. "It was a lot of fun kind of celebrating the end of the season with the fans. I hope everybody liked the food," said Garcia. The Argentinean grill master can be pretty sure of that.
