Four games and nine points, two victories in a row and twice coming back from a deficit to win. That is Werder Bremen's showing this season thus far. In addition there is competition within the team, which is giving head coach Thomas Schaaf the opportunity of reacting to different situations with substitutions. The Green-Whites have twice profited from this as substitutions Marko Arnautovic and Wesley both scored in their home victory against Freiburg. Then on Saturday, Markus Rosenberg proved a super sub as he tallied in Hoffenheim. And with three goals and two assists, Werder have had the most production from their reserves in the Bundesliga this season thus far. "We have more choices again and you need them in order to play among the leaders. If we can use this competition to our advantage and the players accept the situation positively then it can really help us," said manager Klaus Allofs.
And it certainly helped in Hoffenheim. When Arnautovic left the pitch at Rhein Neckar Arena as goal scorer - after starting for the first time this season - he made way for Rosenberg and his winning goal. Schaaf can definitely be satisfied with his reserve players from Saturday. "But that is not enough. I want to keep all of my players satisfied. That is the case when every player gives their all in every game and makes it a difficult decision for me about who will start," said Schaaf.
