The fans had to wait just a bit longer. Before the Werder players went towards the stands at Weser Stadium to thank the fans for their support in the 4-0 victory over Gladbach, they gathered in a collective hug in the centre circle. The team was thrilled to have finally played a fully complete and successful match. "I really have nothing to complain about today," said manager Klaus Allofs after the match. Head coach Thomas Schaaf was also pleased with the performance. "This was a very, very nice evening in regards to the team's performance. They deserved to get the applause they did. Everybody really worked excellently today. This will bring us together," said Schaaf.
The players fully agreed with the team bosses' assessments. WERDER.DE collected the most important statements from the mixed zone.
Marko Arnautovic
"We finally were able to add the second and third goals. Gladbach gave up after it was 3-0. We had to be careful after it was 1-0, and even after the 2-0 goal, some of us thought about the Stuttgart match. But after we made it 3-0, Gladbach stopped playing. We wanted to do quite a lot and were able to achieve most of that. Every individual player played superbly. But I am certain that we can do even more."
Zlatko Junuzovic
"I think the national team break did us good. It was useful to have a lot of time to think about things after the absolute low point, which I see as the second half against Augsburg. Everyone could really question his own performance. And today you really saw a huge difference. We won a lot of challenges and always had a place to pass to, everyone moved well. It was really fun."
Kevin De Bruyne
"All my energy went into playing a good match here. Everything else is in the past for me. My first weeks here in Bremen remind me a little of my first weeks in professional football in Genk. We had a very young team, we experienced a lot of highs and lows in that stage but we also learned a lot. I sense the same here. We will continue to develop."
