The German national team was unable to end their winless streak against Italy, playing to a 1-1 draw (1-0) in Dortmund and failing to make good their semi-final loss at the 2006 World Cup. The German team, which included Werder's Per Mertesacker playing 90 minutes as defensive boss, has not beaten the Squadra Azzurra in some 16 years since winning 2-0 on 21 June 1995 in Zurich.

In front of 60,000 spectators at Signal Iduna Park, Germany played a strong first half and scored after some fine passing with Miroslav Klose making it 1-0 in the 16th minute. Italy refused to give up and knotted the game at 1-1 in the 81st minute through Giuseppe Rossi.
U21 debut of Felix Kroos
In the meantime, Felix Kroos celebrated his debut with the German U21 national team earlier Wednesday evening. The German youngsters however could only play to a 0-0 draw against Greece in Athens.
