Eljero Elia was on hand, Luca Caldirola too. And Franco Di Santo also didn't want to miss the highlight in the US state of Florida. But Theo Gebre Selassie couldn't be in Miami to watch the NBA Finals between the Miami Heat and the San Antonio Spurs. "I was totally ready to watch the Finals. The tickets were more or less already bought, but then something happened," said the Werder defender with a big smile on his face. That "something" was the birth of his first child. Eight days ago, Gebre Selassie's girlfriend Leona gave birth to baby Noe. And Gebre Selassie Jr proved to be just as stubborn as his father is on the pitch.
Theo and Leona had to wait nearly eight hours before the little man Noe finally came out. "It finally happened just before 3 o'clock. He really took his time at the beginning. He was really slow. But he was in a hurry the final half hour. Everything went really fast," said Gebre Selassie, who was in the hospital for the entire birth process. And the Werder player still hasn't fully realised what he was able to experience last Wednesday. "I cannot really describe my feelings. It is totally wonderful but a lot of working is now waiting for us."
The ‘work' has since continued in the family's own four walls in Liberec, where the name for the pair's first child was found. "Noe is Czech for Noah. The fact that we would call him that was set about half a year ago. My wife picked the name. In the end, we both said it's a good name. Besides, Noe isn't so long and fits good with my long last name," said the new father.
Will be optimally prepared thanks to beach volleyball and basketball
But Gebre Selassie is not neglecting his preparations for the new season. "I went running every day in Liberec and was in the weight room. In addition, I played beach volleyball and basketball. I think that I am optimally prepared for the start and hope that I am in good form right away," said Gebre Selassie about the start on Thursday.
