The first hurdle has been conquered. With a 3-2 victory over FV Illertissen in extra time, SV Werder advanced to the second round of the German DFB Cup. Just one day after the match at the Bavarian fourth division Regionalliga team, the cup competition is for now off the agenda for the Werder players. Now, everyone is looking forward solely to the start of the Bundesliga season.
"The cup is over with for now and I don't care about until the end of October," said head coach Robin Dutt looking ahead to the up-coming cup draw Saturday night. That is the same day that the Green-Whites start the Bundesliga at Hertha Berlin.
The goal for the first match of the new season is clear. "Of course, ideally we'd like to win. How we do it, I don't care," said Dutt, who would still like to see his team continue to develop. "Of course we would like to implement the things we worked on during the preparations into the matches. But the result is the most important thing," said the coach.
While the head coach is already thinking about the up-coming opponents, the players spent Monday with a cool down run. Sebastian Prödl, Franco Di Santo and Ludovic Obraniak also took part in the about one-hour long training session as the trio continue to get fit. "The three of them left a pretty good impression. I hope that one or two of them could be available against Hertha," said Dutt.
