The celebration in the 68th minute came from the heart as Niclas Füllkrug scored his first goal on his first touch after getting subbed in during the season opening test against Concordia Suurhusen. The 20-year-old all of a sudden forgot about all the worries, tensions and doubts of the past five months. "It feels damn good to be back on the pitch again, wear the Werder jersey and score goals. I worked a lot of months to get back to this," said Füllkrug, who tallied four times in Werder's 14-0 victory on Norderney.
Werder's home-grown player was allowed to play nearly half an hour against the seventh division side. And that had been decided in conjunction between Werder head coach Robin Dutt and the medical department. It was just about the right amount "to get back into it" according to the striker. And "Lücke" agreed with his playing time. He drove to the goal and showed that he is hungry for more goal scoring. He followed the first score with three more goals. "As a striker, you can certainly pick up some confidence in these games. I wanted to purposely go at the goal. I think I did a good job," said Füllkrug.
Manager Thomas Eichin, who travelled Wednesday afternoon to Norderney to join the team and saw "Lücke" in action for the first time in the evening, said he was excited about the performance of the team's striker. "He is an excellent player with super movement. You have to think about how strong he is and who he can replace. It's no question that he can do it. But he was injured a long time. It depends on him which role he will play," said Eichin. Füllkrug had been out since February due to cartilage damage in his right knee and celebrated his comeback to the pitch against Suurhusen.
