Clemens Fritz has been with SV Werder for the past seven-and-a-half years and his contract expires on 30 June 2014, with it being extended by one year with an option. If the Green-Whites' captain has anything to say about it, his time along the Weser will not end this summer. "As of today, I will stay until 2015," said Fritz at the start of training for the second half of the Bundesliga.
"I still want to play on," reasoned the captain, who said his staying beyond this season depends on two factors. "The club must want to keep me and I have to remain free of injuries." Fritz said if both wishes are fulfilled, then he will retire after the 2014-15 season.
Head coach Robin Dutt would welcome an additional year with the services of his captain. "Clemens Fritz is very important for our team. He is not only a very experienced player but he's also a great personality. It would be very good for us if he continues on," said the coach.
The 33-year-old is spending his fourth season as Werder's captain. In August 2011, he took over the function from Per Mertesacker. Fritz, who played 13 matches in the first half, recently dealt with criticism about his style of play. "I wasn't satisfied myself with my performances. It's not that I'm not looking at them critically. I was dealing with injuries both at the beginning and the end of the first half. But I am not shying away from the competition and do not want any special status. I would like to play well and prove myself week in and week out. That is also important," said Fritz, critical of himself.
