Clemens Fritz will wear the Werder jersey next season as well after the team captain and Werder manager Thomas Eichin agreed to terms. "The decision is not really new for me, it's been set for a while. I really want to play another year and am looking forward to next season," Fritz told WERDER.DE.
Eichin was also happy about the news. "Clemens for me was always a solid part of our future plans. I am very happy that his contract was extended because of a certain number of matched played and he will be an important pillar for us next season," said Eichin.
Head coach Robin Dutt called Fritz an "absolute leader", adding: "He is someone who leads the way. He enjoys our full appreciation and is an important contact person for me. I am happy to be able to work with him next season as well."
The right back transferred in the summer of 2006 from Bayer Leverkusen to the Weser and has been the Green-Whites captain since August 2011. Since his debut in November 2003, the 33-year-old has appeared in 254 Bundesliga matches and scored six goals. In addition, Fritz played in 31 matches in the Champions League, eight times in the Europa League, 22 times in the German DFB Cup and earned 22 caps with the German national team. In 2009, Fritz won the German Cup with SV Werder, a year after finishing runner-up in the 2008 European Championship with Germany.
