Clemens Fritz's first competitive match officially as captain of SV Werder Bremen was a North Derby. But it's a role that Fritz did not need long to get accustomed to. "It really is not that much different than it usually is on Saturday. But it's a good feeling to have this responsibility and the trust. I will try to give my all and be there for the team," said Fritz after the game.
Saturday was also nothing special for head coach Thomas Schaaf. "I decided already before the transfer of Per (Mertesacker) when I named Clemens deputy captain. He has been around long enough and knows what is needed and can identify with the task," said Schaaf.
But how will Fritz interpret his new duties? A buddy or hard boss? Like Baumann, Frings or Mertesacker? "I will address the things that I notice but naturally first of all internally. In addition I will always be a contact person for my teammates. I am a communicative guy and I will remain that way," said Fritz. And his new duty is not really all that new for him. "I have taken responsibility in the past and was always in close contact with my predecessor. The transition was not really that difficult for me and the armband is not really a difficult burden," said the new captain.
