Clemens Fritz and Werder Bremen extended their collaboration for at least two more seasons as the 31-year-old on Thursday signed a contract extension running until 30 June 2014 with an option for another season. Manager Klaus Allofs made the announcement at the press conference ahead of the Bundesliga match this weekend. "Clemens is a real force for Werder Bremen. He is our captain and also plays an important role off the pitch. We are happy that we could extend with him," said Allofs.
Head coach Thomas Schaaf is happy about keeping his captain. "Clemens has played at a high level for years. He plays an important role in bringing consistency to the team. He is a very important player with his experience and his personality."
Fritz gladly accepts the challenge. "I know what is expected of me and I would like to work on that. I am convinced about the perspectives of this young team and feel really good in Bremen. I had very good talks with our sports leaders and that's why it was easy to sign," said Fritz.
Fritz came to Bremen in 2006 from Bayer Leverkusen and developed into a starter with the Green-Whites. He has played 168 Bundesliga matches for the northern Germans and 20 times in the Champions League for the club. Fritz won the league cup with Werder in 2006 and the German DFB Cup in 2009. He also reached the UEFA Cup final in 2009. Fritz also became a German international under the leadership of Schaaf, earning 22 caps and playing at the Euro 2008.
