On to new horizons! Werder's former captain Torsten Frings has confirmed his transfer to Toronto FC. The 34-year-old, who could play two and a half years in North America, flew to the Canadian metropolis on Tuesday. But Frings will not be eligible to play until 15 July 2011 when the transfer window in North America begins and his contract finally takes effect.
Frings already took part in training on Wednesday as he plans on initially getting fit individually with the team playing a home match on Saturday 2 July 2011 against Vancouver Whitecaps and then playing at New York (Red Bulls) and Houston (Dynamo). After that he will officially join team training. His first match could come against the currently sixth-placed team from the Eastern Conference FC Dallas on 21 July 2011 (2 a.m. Bremen time). Frings cannot wait for the action. "I can hardly wait to play again. We have a young team which I want to lead. Canada is an emerging football nation. The standing of the sport is certainly not that high here but I want to do my part to make it more popular," said Frings.
