Torsten Frings is returning to SV Werder for a second time as the former German international will go through a 24-month coaching traineeship with the Green-Whites starting on 28 June. Frings played 11 years along the Weser before finishing off his active playing career in North America.
"We are happy that Torsten Frings will take the next step of his career following his professional playing days with Werder. We are certain that we have developed a good plan with Torsten. At the moment we been having very good experiences with Tim Borowski, who is going through the management trainee program," said management chairman Klaus Filbry.
"I am happy that I am back with Werder and that the club gave me the opportunity to go my way here. I especially think it's great that I can work together with Viktor Skripnik in the future. It will be a work-filled and exciting time for me," said Frings about his new work with the Green-Whites. Frings and Skripnik played together five years with Bremen and won the German DFB Cup together in 1999.
Frings left the Bundesliga after the 2010-11 season following 402 first league appearances with 49 goals and spent the past two seasons playing for the Canadian club Toronto FC. He played 11 years with Bremen, also winning the 2009 German DFB Cup. He played for Bayern Munich from 2002 and 2005, winning the double in 2005 and also played for Borussia Dortmund.
