Werder's former captain Torsten Frings will be given his official goodbye this Saturday before the home match against Cologne. The Green-Whites' management will honour the 34-year-old for his sporting merits directly before the kickoff. "We want to give him this honour in front of a sold-out house. We will bid farewell to Torsten on the pitch - with the whole team behind us, with which he played for so long," said Werder chairman of the board Klaus Allofs.
Frings could not be officially given his farewell at the end of last season because there were no more home matches remaining after the veteran had made his decision. The last time Frings wore the Werder jersey was the test match against SV Wilhelmshaven. He left the pitch there in the 43rd minute to a thunderous applause. And Frings gave head coach Thomas Schaaf his final jersey.
Allofs used the Thursday press conference to announce the first details of the coming collaboration with Frings. "As we said, there was a good talk with Torsten," said Allofs, who announced that Frings would remain fit in the coming weeks with Werder's U19 team under head coach Mirko Votava and at the same time would begin his coaching training. "That is the best solution for both sides. It was Torsten's wish to practice with us every day. Torsten will discuss the details with Mirko Votava. At the same time, it's a look ahead for the stage after his time in Toronto. He would have the opportunity with us to learn coaching from the bottom up," said Allofs.
