After the 2-0 victory in the German DFB Cup at Chemnitzer FC, the Green-Whites will play an away match on Saturday (kick-off 3:30 p.m.) at Mainz 05. Werder hope once again to keep a clean sheet. Therefore the focus at training is performing well defensively.
"The last time we did not concede a goal was in the penultimate match day of last season. That was a very important result for our defence. We could see by the final result that they did everything they good to not allow a goal," said coach Viktor Skripnik at the press conference before the match in Mainz.
Looking ahead to the showdown with Mainz, the defence continues to be the focus. "Today we analysed our defensive conduct. We looked at what we did, what we can improve upon and in what ways we want to act," said Skripnik, who added that tackling conduct is of central importance. The coach also said the most important issue in the remaining sessions will be keeping a tight defence.
Skripnik could see in his first training sessions as new Werder coach that everyone on the squad worked with a lot of motivation and dedication. He was "thankful" that his team tried to implement his ideas after just a few sessions. "Everyone is very concentrated and everybody wants to improve the situation. I am certain that everyone is intensively preparing for the match on Saturday," said Skripnik. "Maybe a ‘click' went off in everyone's head."
