Werder president and manager Klaus-Dieter Fischer announced Wednesday afternoon that he will be stepping down as manager of SV Werder Bremen GmbH & Co KG aA and as president of Sport-Verein "Werder" von 1899 e.V. at the end of the 2014 calendar year. The 73-year-old Werder veteran is making the move for personal reasons. "The club has existed for 115 years now and I have been a member for 60 years, including 45 years in leadership positions. I always had the ambition to choose for myself when I would leave and I think that time has come for the end of the year. I also decided to make available the office as president," said Fischer, who also made clear that he will always remain close to the Green-Whites. "This club guided my life and opened worlds to me that I would have never experienced otherwise. And I am infinitely thankful for that and I hope I have given something back."
Fistcher has been a member of Sport-Verein "Werder" von 1899 e.V. since 1955 and served as referee, treasurer of the amateur football department, youth coach and youth supervisor. He has held a leadership function with SV Werder since 1970 and has been a member of the board since the re-structuring of the club in 1999. After the capital company separated in 2004, he acted as manager and president. Over the past decades, Fischer has characterised the image of the Werder family like no other. In addition, he is a driving force for Werder's social commitment. Fairness, sports, health, openness and tolerance have always been values close to his heart.
