Well after the final whistle of the bitter 3-0 loss in Mainz - more than 60 minutes later in fact - the Werder fans were still in the fan block, singing tirelessly chants of "Werder Bremen, olé" in an otherwise completely empty Coface Arena. "What I just experienced in the fan curve before I came to the press conference was amazing, incredible! I don't know what to say," said Werder coach Robin Dutt.
The Werder fans continued to sing an hour after the final whistle and did so until the team came back onto the pitch. "Once again, thousands of fans travelled with us to Mainz. Just for them, we owe them a reaction to the poor performance today in the next home match against Hoffenheim," said Zlatko Junuzovic after the final whistle. "We should be ashamed of ourselves. The fans travelled so far and we play that kind of match," said captain Clemens Fritz, who would have understood if the Werder fans were angry. But it ended up entirely different.
The scenario at Mainz's Coface Arena showed one thing for certain: The relationship between the team and the fans is more intact that ever before - and there's hardly anything like it in the league.
