The first new acquisition for the 2011-12 season is all set as midfielder Mehmet Ekici left Bayern Munich, from whom he was sent on loan for last season to Nurnberg, and will wear the Green-White jersey next season. The 20-year-old and Bayern came to an agreement late Tuesday evening. The Bavarian native, who plays for the Turkish national team, signed a four-year contract with Werder until 30 June 2015.

Official presentation next Monday

Ekici was in Bremen on Monday for the medical examination, and Ekici will be officially presented at a press conference next Monday 23 May 2011.

"We are happy to have found a player in Mehmet who fits perfectly in our required profile. He is a young player with German roots who played himself into the forefront this season," said manager Klaus Allofs. And head coach Thomas Schaaf added: "He fits with his offensive playing style very well with us. He will provide plenty of positive moments with his way of leading the game."

Ekici is looking forward to his new surroundings, telling WERDER.TV: "Werder are a very good address for me. I am looking forward to the stadium, the fans and the team. I would like to use my chance here. I can continue to develop positively. I would like to exhibit my qualities so that things go well for the team."

Ekici comes to Werder having played in 32 Bundesliga matches and collected three goals and nine assists in his first full professional season. On 29 March 2011, he celebrated his debut with the Turkish national team in their 2-0 victory over Austria. Ekici began his career in 1996 with Unterhaching and transferred just one year later to the Bayern Munich performance centre where he went through all the youth teams until 2010 before training with the professional squad.
