Werder midfielder Mehmet Ekici has played 60 Bundesliga matches in his young career. But the Munich native hasn't played any of them for his home club Bayern Munich. Ekici played 10 years in the youth ranks at Bayern but never appeared in a Bundesliga match for the German record champions, making his way to Werder via Nuremberg. On Saturday, Memo returns home as Werder take on Bayern at 3:30 p.m. "Munich will not be a holiday. We are going there for work," said Ekici looking forward to his return to Munich.
The Turkish international knows of the strengths of the runaway leaders, but it's important for Werder to not be afraid. "We want to play at their level, play aggressively and give our all. If we just pull back and let Bayern do their thing, then it will be very difficult. But if we are alert from the first second on and are present, then we could also gain points in Munich," said Ekici.
After finally staying free of injury for some time, Ekici celebrated a personal highlight in the last away match in Stuttgart, picking up his first brace in the Bundesliga in Bremen's 4-1 victory. "I am not resting my laurels on those two goals. I was happy that I could help the team. That was a nice success," said the international.
The midfielder will not only be visiting family and friends in Munich but also two former Bayern teammates. "I have regular contact with David Alaba and Diego Contento. I spent my entire youth career with Bayern with Diego since the F-youth. We often play against each other online on PlayStation," said Ekici.
