Two days after the convincing 4-1 home victory over Wolfsburg, the Werder players took part in a lactate test Monday afternoon. Head coach Thomas Schaaf's team completed their laps on the Tartanbahn track at the Platz 11 grounds.
Mehmet Ekici could not complete the run as the midfielder appeared in discomfort on the way to the changing room. "It doesn't make any sense when I have pain already with even the easiest drills," said Ekici. He had to sit out a couple of days due to his pulled stomach muscle before returning to the training grounds on Sunday individually for his initial attempt to come back. It appeared then that everything was okay, but the setback followed on Monday. "Unfortunately there is no improvement in sight. The first half is over with for me," said Ekici.
Andreas Wolf also had slight problems following a knock to his right knee, which forced the centre back to leave the game early against Wolfsburg. And Wolf had issues with the knee during the lactate test. "I feel it when I put stress on it. It's a bit better when it's really well warmed up, but then I have to wait and see how the knee reacts," said Wolf.
Neither Naldo nor Aleksandar Ignjovski could run any laps. The Brazilian had a bruised hip while "Iggy" complained of pain in his groin area. Both players were kept out of the lactate test for precautionary reasons. Observers of the training session also missed Florian Trinks, who on Saturday played a full 90 minutes with the professionals for the second time in his career. The 19-year-old had worked ahead and taken a lactate test with the U23s.
