The two minutes of stoppage time were really nerve racking. When Manuel Gräfe finally blew the final whistle, 40,000 Werder fans breathed a collective sigh of relief! Werder will remain in the Bundesliga!
The one point against Frankfurt was the point to secure the top flight! The nervousness then switched to minutes of celebratory and thank you scenes. Rarely have the Werder players carried a banner for their supporters with as much meaning as Saturday afternoon. "Allez Gänsehaut! (Everything goose bumps!) Thank you to the most awesome fans in the world," read the banner, which was presented to all the grandstands before Fritz, Hunt, Yildirim, De Bruyne and co took an honorary lap and shook hands and thanked fans in the East Curve.
"The moment is simply just about relief and it's very big. Today, our thanks go out to our fantastic fans and every single employee of this club that has supported us the last few weeks," said Sebastian Prödl. "There are so many examples of teams that lose their fans in the relegation battle. But we had the feeling that we even won more fans. For sure, the fans this season were better than us." Prödl's teammate Kevin De Bruyne agreed, saying: "We don't have to talk about the match today, we only care about staying in the league. It was impressive how the fans pushed us collectively."
Just like last week, head coach Thomas Schaaf started the official post-match press conference with a thank you to the fans. "Fantastic! Remarkable! Extraordinary! Our fans gave an important impulse. The people of Bremen can be proud of themselves. They gave themselves a present of their own with their effort," said the coach, who at the same time was reserved talking about the team. "I had assumed that we would need to go all the way but in the end that we would secure our spot in the league. It's nice that we already now have the decision. But I don't see any reason to run around like Rumplestiltskin."
