"2016" appeared on the back of the first Werder jersey handed over to Thomas Eichin Thursday afternoon. But the end of the duration of his contract will not necessarily mean the end of Eichin's collaboration with Bremen. "Werder stands for consistent work and it would be nice if we can achieve together being successful for many more years," emphasized Eichin at his first official appearance with the Green-Whites.

"Thomas Eichin is a team player who made it clear from the very first second in a serious and non-brash manner that he wants to use this chance in Bremen," described advisory board chairman Willi Lemke his first contact with Eichin. After that, Eichin was introduced to the advisory board and head coach Thomas Schaaf. "That was certainly a very important talk for Thomas Schaaf and me because it's a prerequisite that the chemistry works. I have always worked very closely with coaches and I would like to keep this style. We met up for three hours in Salzburg and exchanged ideas," said Eichin about his talk with Schaaf. The Werder coach also said he was confident about Eichin working out. "Thomas Eichin is a sensible solution. He has more than proven himself in another sport and he is still closely connected to football. I am looking forward to the collaboration with Thomas," said Schaaf.

The introduction at Werder was the end of a long way back to football for Eichin. "I worked 13 years for this. Ice hockey is a great sport, but my goal was always to return to football. During my work with the Cologne Haie, I never lost contact with my sport. I have gone to certainly more than 1,000 football matches in the last 10 years and still have a lot of contacts," said Eichin.

The new team of Filbry, Fischer, Schaaf and Baumann is not entirely new to Eichin. "My Bremen knowledge is limited to the football aspects. I played a number of times at Weser Stadium and had the pleasure of playing against strikers such as Klaus Allofs, Kalle Riedle and Wynton Rufer," recalled Eichin. He also played a short time with Frank Baumann in Nuremberg. "I was on loan there for half a year. He was a very talented young player, I was the veteran. We shared rooms a couple times. Even later, I was an interested follower of Frank's path."

Now Eichin will work with Baumann and co. - and certainly not only after his official start in a couple of months. "Thomas Schaaf and Frank Baumann have had their thoughts about the roster, and if they need my opinion then I will offer it. I am certain that we will find the ways and means to discuss important questions. In all other matters, I will familiarize myself with them meticulously after my start," said Eichin.
