It was the perfect end to the North Derby weekend for manager Thomas Eichin. After surviving the football thriller at Hamburg on Saturday and the usual follow-up of the match day on Sunday, the sports boss kept a promise to his manager colleague Klaus-Dieter Fischer on Monday and travelled to Leer in East Frisian to visit the Werder fan club Ossis.
The reason for visiting the Schöne Aussichten restaurant directly on the port of Leer was the celebratory handover of a check for 1,400 euros to the Werder Foundation. The Ossis fans collected the monies as part of a charity run over five days from Leer to Weser Stadium at the end of last season. "For the realisation of this crazy idea, we got a promise back then from Klaus-Dieter Fischer that Thomas Eichin would come to visit. Now Werder kept their word and really got some plus points because everyone here in East Frisian knows that it's not normal for a Bundesliga manager to drive 200 kilometres Monday night to a fan club meeting. You can see there how special Werder is," said Manfred Kramer from Ossis.
Eichin was also happy about the evening despite the long trip. "These contacts are also part of Werder. The fans from the region have been taking this trip upon themselves regularly when they come to Weser Stadium and support us. So it's only natural that we stop by," said Eichin, who brought plenty of time and thrilled the Ossis fans. "We sat together with him a long time and he told us a lot of interesting things. He gave us an in-depth look into his work, told us about the activities during the transfer period and walked us through his everyday work. There were plenty of surprises there too for us. The evening was a real highlight for every fan," said Kramer.
As Eichin was making his return trip to Bremen, the Werder experts in Leer were still sitting together and talking shop. "That was the first visit of Mr. Eichin by us and he was very nice and easy. Our unanimous judgement is that Eichin and Werder fit together!"
