Thomas Eichin, the current manager of the Cologne Haie ice hockey club and former Borussia Mönchengladbach player, was named as the new manager of sport for SV Werder Bremen. The collaboration will begin officially in the spring 2013 after the end of the Haie's ice hockey season. Werder advisory board chairman Willi Lemke confirmed the personnel decision Thursday morning. The 46-year-old Eichin signed a contract with the Green-Whites until 30 June 2016.
"We announced a smart solution for the successor to Klaus Allofs and we found it in Thomas Eichin. He was on our shortlist from the beginning and fits perfectly our job profile with his past experiences. He has experience in negotiations and knows the Bundesliga. And he proved in ice hockey that he can successfully overcome all the highs and lows of being at the helm of a tradition-rich club," said Lemke about the agreement.
Eichin, who will be presented in a press conference in Bremen at 2:30 p.m., is looking forward to his new duties. "This is a unique chance for me to return to football in a very interesting position with a renown club. I am very happy for the trust that all those responsible at SV Werder have given to me," said Eichin, who in 2012 had extended his contract with the Cologne Haie until 2016.
Eichin appeared in 176 matches as a defender for Borussia Mönchengladbach from 1985 to 1996 and four more in 1998. He also played in 10 matches on loan from Nuremberg. After his playing career, Eichin worked three years in marketing with Borussia Mönchengladbach from 1996 before moving into the management team of the Cologne Haie in 1999.
