Thomas Eichin has sat at his desk at Weser Stadium for nearly three weeks. The new Werder manager can look over the training grounds from the window in his office. But because of interviews, meetings and a number of appointments, he really hadn't been up close during the training sessions. Eichin celebrated a bit of a debut on Tuesday, finally standing next to Petersen, Arnautovic, Schaaf and co. on the training grounds.
"Today was the first morning in which I didn't have any appointments and could finally stop by. Until now, it had never worked because of time issues," said Eichin, who was impressed with the team's vigour. "They really went at it. It was fun watching them. You could tell that the fire was there. I liked it a lot that everyone was committed."
The former Borussia Mönchengladbach player sees a positive general mood as the key to the preparations for the match at Gladbach. "Of course we will always talk about the negative side after three straight defeats. But it's very important as a professional to believe in your strengths and keep your head up. Then it will work out again," said Eichin. "We are looking forward to Saturday night and are heading to Mönchengladbach with a positive frame of mind."
It was good sign that Eichin's first training visit came under a warm, sunny and blue sky. "It was a perfect day to be on the pitch, to kick around the ball and prepare with all you have for Saturday," said Eichin.
