Once referee Edgar Steinborn flew the final whistle on the match between Bayern Munich and Werder Bremen on 8 May 2004 at 5:17 p.m., all dams broke loose for Werder. The Green-Whites became German champions 10 years ago to the day with a 3-1 victory in Munich! A few weeks later, Werder beat Alemannia Aachen 3-2 to complete the league and cup double.
Ivan Klasnic, Johan Micoud and Ailton scored the goals to send the 8,000 Werder fans at Olympic Stadium and all of Bremen into a wild frenzy. Those players and coach Thomas Schaaf will naturally remember that day for a very long time just like the Werder fans!
Thomas Schaaf: "Personally, I still have a lot of memories and images from that double year. It doesn't matter if it's from Munich or when we returned to the city here. There are so many beautiful memories. For example, when we landed in Bremen after the match in Munich or when we drove through the city and all the people cheered us on. That was extraordinary. I still get goose bumps thinking back on it. That was a great moment."
Tim Borowski:
"Where should I even start? The 3-1 victory in Munich, the return at Bremen Airport, the caravan to City Hall - those were memories you will never forget as a player. And since nobody thought before the season that we could do it, that made the success that much nicer. We were just a great group in 2003-04. Some of us are still friends today. Winning the title was sensational. The cup final was perhaps not the best match of my career but certainly one of the most emotional."
Johan Micoud:
"We had the belief that we really could do it. That was the decisive in us winning both titles."
Ailton:
"The day before I couldn't sleep, couldn't eat. I was only thinking: Bayern, Bayern."
Nelson Valdez:
"That was only my second season as a professional. Winning the league and cup double is still my biggest success to this date."
Valérien Ismaël:
"The 2003-04 season was simply unforgettable. We made history."
