Werder Bremen will take on third division side 1. FC Saarbrücken in the first round of the German DFB Cup, following the draw Saturday evening. It will be the first competitive match for Robin Dutt as new head coach of the Green-Whites. The match will take place between 2-5 August with the exact schedule still to be determined.
The Green-Whites would like to return to their strong DFB Cup tradition after getting bounced in the first round in the last two seasons - both times against a third division club. In 2011 they lost 2-1 to 1. FC Heidenheim and last year it was a 3-1 defeat after extra time to Preußen Münster.
Reaction to the draw:
Robin Dutt:
"It will be the first highlight at the end of our preparation. Saarbrücken have a good team and they can rely on their home advantage. The stadium will be really full. That will not be easy. But as a Bundesliga team, we are automatically considered favourite, which we also accept. But Werder have experienced the last couple years how difficult such a first round victory is."
Thomas Eichin :
"The opponents are certainly not one of the easiest teams in the draw. We have to be highly concentrated. But of course we are the Bundesliga team and we have to overcome this hurdle. I am also certain that we will be especially motivated looking back to the past two years."
Johannes Wurtz (Werder player who transferred from Saarbrücken to Bremen in the summer of 2012):
"That's a great thing. I am on holiday on Crete now and totally shut down from football. I didn't know anything about the draw and just learned of it now. It's just excellent. There couldn't be a better motivation for the preparation. But that would have been there this year regardless. I will be back tomorrow from Crete then I will be automatically more excited."
