Twenty-eight years after their first and until now only trip to the Far East, SV Werder Bremen left Monday for China. The flight with Turkish Airlines, Werder's partner for the China trip, left Bremen punctually at 2:30 p.m. The Werder team is due to arrive in Changchun on Tuesday 10 p.m. local time (4 p.m. in Bremen) after stopovers in Istanbul and Beijing.
"We hope that we can increase the popularity of the Bundesliga and Werder Bremen with this trip. Of course it's important for us to make sponsor contacts in China. It would be nice if we could secure a long-term commitment," said Werder's management chairman Klaus Filbry shortly before leaving from City Airport Bremen.
In addition to building up sponsor contacts, the Werder players also can expect some hard work in the next seven days in the Far East. "We have a very long preparation time for the up-coming season which offers the chance to make this kind of trip and use for sponsor appointments. We also have two test matches there and will train regularly in China. We have closely co-ordinated the week on site with the coaching staff," said Filbry in the Turkish Airlines Lounge.
