Kevin De Bruyne is the shooting star of the Belgian national team and Werder's top scorer thus far this season. But headlines in Germany have not focused on his strong start in Bremen. Instead, German press have centred their reporting on critical statements in two interviews De Bruyne had done with Belgian media.
After being away nine days with the Belgian national team, the 21-year-old used his return Wednesday to Bremen to make a public statement about the situation, which he had already clarified by telephone with manager Klaus Allofs and head coach Thomas Schaaf. De Bruyne, who talked to the Bremen leaders in person on Wednesday, had no problem offering a clear commitment to Werder. "It was very frustrating for me to read what they had made out of the interviews. There are no problems between me and Werder and I hope that the fans will see that the same way. The most important thing for me is that they see me giving everything I have on the pitch. I hope that the fans give me their trust. Werder is my chance," said De Bruyne.
"I formulated things in a dumb way. So there was a series of misunderstandings. I never said that I am happy that I only signed for one year in Bremen. I said that I am happy to have signed with Werder because they are giving me a chance to play a lot. I also said that Chelsea remains my employer and that Werder made it clear to me that I can only stay here one year. In the interview, they did not print the complete sentence," said De Bruyne.
He was also aggravated about the depiction that he has reservations against his German colleagues. "If that were the case I would be in a bad mood every day in Germany and could not give my best on the pitch," said De Bruyne, who could not hold back a laugh at this point in the press conference. "I have no problems with the guys. For the road games, I share a room with Nils Petersen. I have a good relationship with him. He's a very nice guy," said De Bruyne. The Belgian also praised the Werder sports bosses. "I called Thomas Schaaf immediately after the publications. We both had the same assessment. I also get along well with Klaus Allofs. We also laughed together in our talk today and made some jokes. There are no problems," said De Bruyne.
