Werder talent Davie Selke and the German U19 national team fulfilled their dream of winning the European Championship and taking the second major title for the country 18 days after Germany won the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. In the final, Marcus Sorg's team beat Portugal 1-0 at Szusza Ferenc Stadium in Budapest, collecting the continental crown for the third title following 1981 and 2008. Selke won the scoring title in the tournament.
It was Germany's third title in six finals in the age group. In 1981, Roland Wohlfahrt scored the decisive goal in a 1-0 victory over Poland in the former U18 tournament in their own country. The team won the world championship title the same year.
In 2008, coach Horst Hrubesch's team which included German internationals Sven and Lars Bender as well as World Cup winner Ron-Robert Zieler beat Italy 3-1 in the final.
