D - Debut anniversary: Werder captain Torsten Frings made his Bundesliga debut on 15 February 1997 as a 20-year-old in a home match against Freiburg. Just five years later the German football magazine kicker proclaimed the midfield motor as "one of the best the league has to offer". At the same time he left Bremen, making stops in Dortmund and Bayern before returning to Werder in 2005. More than 13 years and seven months after his debut, Frings played his 300th Bundesliga match for Werder Bremen on 25 September 2010 against Hamburg.

E - Eventful start: New acquisition Marko Arnautovic needed just 90 eventful minutes in his starting debut to give the Weser Stadium spectators a taste of what's to come. Arnautovic scored two goals and set up a third by Hugo Almeida in an attractive offensive firework of a 4-2 victory at the end of August against Cologne. "Marko showed a lot of what we imagined. A good match," said head coach Thomas Schaaf. Still there have been a number of stages in Arnautovic's personal development, among them a lack of consistency in his performances. Werder legend and Arnautovic supporter Andreas Herzog said the switch to Bremen will help Arnautovic, telling www.11freunde.de: "I told him: ‘Watch out, if you don't make it under Thomas Schaaf at Werder it will be very, very difficult for you in the future - despite your extraordinary potential.' For me his transfer to Werder is the ideal solution. He is in great hands for his age and level of development." Now it's up to Marko Arnautovic to continue on his way.

F - Flight controller: The summer preparations had already been going for four weeks when Werder's final three World Cup players returned to the team on 2 August. The team was currently at their third training camp in Bad Waltersdorf, Austria. A three-member shuttle service was sent from there to Graz Airport to pick up the Werder trio. The Lufthansa flight FH 3632 was about 40 late due to bad weather before touching down at 2:17 p.m. - more or less guided home by members of the Werder staff. Short notice they took over the airport's visitor balcony and decorated it with green balloons to "serve" as semaphores. The flight tower luckily remained closed off to the Werder "flight controllers". To help the Green-White travelers' orientation, part of the welcoming committee held up a sign with the names of the three much-awaited trio, reading. "Mr. Mertesacker, Mr. ļzil, Mr. W1ese". The three German internationals who left cloudy Bremen in the early morning were clearly happy about the fine welcome.
