SV Werder controlled the match on Sunday with 26 shots on goal, nearly 64 percent possession and enough chances for two home victories. But in the end, the Green-Whites played to only a 1-1 draw against Nuremberg after once again failing to take advantage of their dominance. Lots of effort but not enough return - a mirror image of the entire first half of the season.
"The fact that we gave so much effort, created lots of chances but could not score and therefore consistently come up with an advantage has plagued us the entire first half," said head coach Thomas Schaaf. The coach saw the Nuremberg match as symbolic for the first half of the season in which SV Werder picked up 22 points for 12th place.

The bottom line after the first 17 match days was predominantly positive, though it's clear that there is still a lot of work to be done. "Of course we are not happy with the standings," said Nils Petersen. "But we are playing attractive football, the fans are having fun when they come into the stadium and this team can improve because there is a lot more potential." Deputy captain Aaron Hunt sees things similarly. "I think the first half went positively. We went through a major upheaval in the summer, got a lot of new players and have a very young team. It's clear that not everything can work yet. But we have shown with our performances that we are on the right path," said Hunt.
Schaaf also praised his young team. "What the team has shown has been good and was fun. I'm sorry for the guys that their efforts haven't been confirmed with enough points. We just haven't picked up enough points. The team had earned more often a victory. But all told, we have to be more present and more effective. Then the situation with the table will be better," said the coach.
