SV Werder Bremen have reinforced their goalkeeper position for the second half of the season as the Green-Whites have acquired 22-year-old Belgian Koen Casteels on loan until the end of the season from VfL Wolfsburg.
The former Belgian U21 national team keeper, who most recently played by TSG 1899 Hoffenheim and signed a three-and-a-half year contract with Wolfsburg until 30 June 2018, is expected to take part in Bremen's next training session Thursday afternoon. "With him, we brought in a young keeper with Bundesliga experience who gives us more depth at the position. Our clear number one, Raphael Wolf, will be given great support from him and Richard Strebinger," said manager Thomas Eichin. Head coach Viktor Skripnik welcomed the transfer, saying: "We made the decision together. Koen Casteels will be well integrated here and be highly motivated."
The 18-year-old Raif Husic, who is still eligible to play for the U19 team, will now train with the U23 squad. "Raif definitely is among the best keepers in Germany in his age group. We have decided that the new constellation is more beneficial for his development," said Eichin, who made the decision in close cooperation with the coaching staff and sports directors Rouven Schröder and Frank Baumann.
