Luca Caldirola got a tattoo of his life's motto on his left calf more than five years ago. "I will fight with all of my strengths to realize my dreams. I will do it for all the people that have always believed in me," is tattooed on his body. The centre back with a strong left foot has gone through four loan stops since then, but Caldirola achieved his next goal late Wednesday afternoon - transferring to the Bundesliga and the club for whom he has wanted to play for years.

"Werder is one of the top clubs in the Bundesliga. I am very happy to be here and will give my all in the Werder jersey," said the 22-year-old at his presentation at Weser Stadium.

The 1.89m Italian gained a lot of attention at the U21 European Championship two weeks ago. The captain carried his team to the final in Israel, where Italy lost to Spain. "The tournament is the biggest there is in the junior ranks. It has a high standing. There were so many unbelievable, very good players there, regardless if that's from Germany, Netherlands, England or Spain. For me, the European Championship was a super experience," said Caldirola.

"Be like him one day"

His biggest idol Alessandro Nesta went a step further in 1996 as he led the Italian U21 team to the European title. "It's my dream to be like him one day," said Caldirola about the defender legend.

After leading Italy to the runners-up spot in Israel, Caldirola would now like to use his wealth of experience for Werder. "Luca has quite a few games under his belt as a 22-year-old. He has a certain cleverness and has the ability to lead a defence. We hope to develop a very good player in the coming years," said Werder manager Thomas Eichin.

After playing at the U21 European Championship, Caldirola will leave Bremen on Thursday once again to take holidays on Sardinia. He will join the team for the start of the training camp in Zillertal. Until then he will spend the coming days and weeks with his family.
