He is one piece in the new makeover at SV Werder - and he's already become a very important one at that. Luca Caldirola, the first Italian to wear the Green-Whites jersey, immediately fought himself into a spot in the starting line-up.
Luca Caldirola spent the majority of his football youth with Inter Milan. And now it's SV Werder who are profiting from this training. The 22-year-old has already shown in his first games in the Green-Whites kit just how valuable he can be for Robin Dutt's team. WERDER.DE talked to the Italian.
Luca, how did you experience your first match at Weser Stadium?
LUCA CALDIROLA: Very emotionally. The atmosphere in the stadium was great. The fans sang the entire time. And we won - that made the day perfect.
You appear to have quickly gotten accustomed to the new league and the new surroundings ...
... because I have felt at home here from the very start. I quickly arrived in Bremen. The team and everyone in the club really helped me to find my way.
With Werder you have already played centre back and on the left side of the defence. Which do you prefer?
Honestly, centre back because that's where I have always played in previous years. But if the coach puts me on the left side, then I will get the job done. Of course it's always an adjustment when you play here and then there.
Is life in Germany also an adjustment for you?
The big difference to Germany is that Italians are always in a hurry, for example also with driving. Here in Germany, the people drive very calmly. In Italy on the other hand they more hectic. Otherwise, there are a lot of similarities. The people in northern Italy are not that different from those in Germany.
What would you like to achieve this season with Werder?
It's difficult to say since the season has only just begun. Everyone in the team is thinking from match to match. We will see in the end where we land.
How far are you from making your debut with the senior national team?
I hope that it comes soon. Playing in the national team is a dream for every footballer. Should the national team coach call me and invite me, then I would be the happiest person in the world.
Whoever grew up with Inter and was the captain of the Italian U21 national team will likely have a big career. Do you have any career plans?
Just like every football, I have goals in mind. But those don't mean anything at the moment. I am very happy being in Bremen because Werder is a very big club and the right step for me at the moment.
