The rehearsal was successful. They will do it again on Saturday - and that for 24 hours. The Werder flag has already been waving high over the roof of the highest point of the Park Hotel on Monday. It was four metres by four metres in green with the white diamond.
Deputy director Jens Wehrenberg had swapped Bremen's flag for the Werder flag shortly before that. "I don't think this has ever happened in the history of the Park Hotel. I think the action is really great. The flag will be hoisted again on Friday and wave until the Werder match," said Wehrenberg, who was still on the roof when he called out a message to Bremen residents and SV Werder supporters. "Join us and show your flags!" It's a campaign with a message that's clear heading into the final three Bundesliga matches: "Werder need Bremen and Bremen needs Werder!"
The Park Hotel however was the last place where WERDER.TV cameras showed up. Before that, the TV crew went across town looking for Bremen residents who were showing their Werder colours and flags and getting others involved. They went to vegetable stands, the weekly market, the butcher, the nice neighbour next door, young and old, men and women - it didn't matter. The only criteria was: "We are Werder Bremen and are displaying that to the outside world."
The club is hoping the spirit reaches the entire Hanseatic city by Saturday and heads to Weser Stadium where Werder have a chance to avoid relegation with a match against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. It seems unimaginable that the city would not have a football club in the Bundesliga. "Werder need Bremen and Bremen needs Werder!"
