The semi-final of the 2012 European Championship will have a classic showdown on Thursday 28 June 2012 as Germany take on Italy. Many football fans in Germany will remember the bitter elimination of the German national team from the 2006 World Cup in the semi-finals against Italy in Dortmund. One of the players on hand was Tim Borowski, who was in the starting line-up in the 2-0 loss in extra time.
"That is a very painful memory. It was a very bitter elimination," said "Boro". "The Italians played their best match against us and I don't want to think about what we could have accomplished if we had passed that hurdle." But Borowski said the match-up from 2006 will have no impact for the up-coming showdown. "There may still be a couple of German players in the squad, but it's six years ago. The German team is only thinking about the Euro title and not about the possibility of revenge."
When the match is kicked off on Thursday, "Boro" is expecting a tight match. "The Italians will have the psychological advantage knowing that they beat us in the semi-finals in 2006. In addition, Italy is an absolute tournament team which after a very difficult qualification started surprisingly well in the Euro." Still, the 32-year-old believes in a Germany victory. "Regarding quality, the German team is better. And after the success against Greece - in which all the changes taken immediately worked - Germany is for me the title favourite."
