It was the 27th minute as Marco Reus received the ball in the midfield and sent a long ball to Patrick Herrmann. Sebastian Boenisch rushed back after the Gladbach attacker and tried to keep him from shooting. A bit of contact before the box resulted in Herrmann going down and a whistle - a red card for Werder. For the Polish international, this scene meant the early end to a return to the starting line-up for the first time since 28 August 2010.
"This is very, very bitter for me," said a disappointed Boenisch after the game. "After being away so long of course I would have liked to have played 90 minutes." But the defender could understand the referee Marco Fritz's decision. "I think you can give the red card in that case. I was one of the last defenders and was stopping a goal chance," said the 25-year-old. "But I have to go after him otherwise he will score the goal."
Boenisch watched the remaining 63 minutes of the game disappointed from the players' tunnel. Head coach Thomas Schaaf did not agree with the referee's ruling. "I cannot understand the red card. Basti of course is very disappointed. He imagined things going differently. But it doesn't matter, he has to work on," said Schaaf.
And Boenisch can definitely rely on the support of his teammates. "It is really bitter for him. After the scene I went directly to the referee and said he should be a bit compassionate because Basti hasn't played in an eternity," said the Werder captain.
"We will be there for him now and talk him up and we played the rest of the game for him. Basti will come out of the situation improved," added Fritz. It was at least a minor comfort that the Green-Whites were able to collect one point. "I am happy that the team showed such a good performance and got the point," said Boenisch. He will be even happier when he is in the starting line-up again.
