Sebastian Boenisch would have liked to have laced up his running shoes but that is not even an option at the moment. While the Werder players spent the morning with the final lactate test before the summer break, Boenisch approached his teammates in long trainers and a bit wobbly on his legs. It was a visit before his teammates head out on holiday.
"I am walking today without my crutches for the first time today," said Werder's left back about his latest step in his comeback. Even though the 24-year-old cannot put too much pressure on his knee, he believes he has passed the lowest point in his lingering injury misery. "In the beginning I could hardly do anything, had to rest all the time. But now I can be active three to four hours a day." Things are moving forward for Werder's No. 3.
Boensich, who had hoped to return to the pitch long ago after recovering from his knee injury, had to undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right knee in early March. "During the course of the illness, a rare and unexpected complication arose," said Werder's team doctor Dr. Götz Dimanski about the surgery by knee specialist Dr. Ulrich Boenisch. "Scare tissue had built up and made an extra surgery necessary," said the fullback.
And Boenisch cannot really think about taking a holiday with the rehab measures outstanding. "That's not possible," said Boenisch. Instead he wants to work hard on his return. "I don't want to be on any fixed schedule, but I hope to be back on the pitch the latest in the fall." Then he can finally swap the street shoes for the football boots.
