Every football player should have the chance to play a major international tournament in their home country at least once. And the Euro 2012 is that chance - as well as the career highlight - for Poland native Sebastian Prödl. Despite a months-long injury break, the Werder defender has made his way into the preliminary Euro 2012 squad for the tournament co-hosts. Boenisch, who became U21 European champion in 2009 for Germany, will be regularly reporting for WERDER.DE about his experiences with the Polish national team to bring Werder fans closer to the neighbouring country, its people and the football culture there. Have fun!
PART 3
"Witam Werder fans!
We had the last three days off and the chance to visit our families. Every player had to be back in the hotel yesterday evening by 9 p.m. We now have moved into the hotel in Warsaw in which we will spend the entire European Championship. By now you can tell that the Euro is right around the corner in Poland. The city of Warsaw is decorated with advertising and banners for the tournament - the anticipation is increasing. The victories against Latvia and Slovakia gave us hope that we can also win the opening match.
But now we have the dress rehearsal! I don't want to say anything bad about any team, internationally you always have to give everything you have. But certainly the match against Andorra in Warsaw was planned to give us some self-confidence. We want to score a couple goals.
But the big one is next Friday. June 8, at 6 p.m.! That date has been burnt into everyone's heads! The opening match against Greece! For me, it's also noteworthy that we will be playing against Sokratis. The last few weeks with Werder we talked about it every day. It will be a huge game. Everyone in Europe will be watching.
"There are no favourites in our group"
So much is dependent for us on this game. It will be decided how the atmosphere is in the country. Looking at the names, our first round group is not that prominent and there is no favourite.
There is also anticipation for the stadium in which the opening match will take place - Warsaw's National Stadium. It's a dream and everyone who has played there will confirm that. Whenever I have been there, there is a super atmosphere. We played there against Portugal. It was certainly not a scoring festival for us but we played orderly. A good omen.
In general, the stadiums in Poland are very decorated. The country can be proud of itself. Warsaw and Gdansk are my favourites, the stadiums are excellent. I myself have not played in all the arenas. In the game against Italy in Wroclaw, I was still injured.
Greetings to the Weser!
Do zobaczenia, Basti
