Every football player should have the chance to play a major international tournament in their home country at least once. And the Euro 2012 is that chance - as well as the career highlight - for Poland native Sebastian Prödl. Despite a months-long injury break, the Werder defender has made his way into the preliminary Euro 2012 squad for the tournament co-hosts. Boenisch, who became U21 European champion in 2009 for Germany, will be regularly reporting for WERDER.DE about his experiences with the Polish national team to bring Werder fans closer to the neighbouring country, its people and the football culture there. Have fun!
PART 1
"Witam (Hello) Werder fans!"
It's finally getting started! On Tuesday we had our first test match with the Euro squad. And the final stages of the preparations finally started with the 1-0 victory over Latvia. More games will come and they are very important for me. I still need to fine tune my game as I lack some game experience following my long injury break. With Werder, I didn't have that many chances because of my red card and three-game suspension after the Gladbach game.
During my rehab, I had some very good talks with our national team coach Frantisek Smuda. But you are never certain in this kind of situation. You want to see it black on white. Unfortunately I couldn't watch the official nominations a couple weeks ago on television. But my father was watching it. And I kept looking at my mobile phone until the liberating news finally came. This tournament really means a lot to me.
After a cure, now it's time for the action. The preparations started for us just like the German national team with a regeneration holiday in Turkey, where the conditions were perfect and we had a chance within the team to get to know one another better. For me it's important to have a certain personal relationship with every teammate. I want to know how my colleagues think and act, what kind of family situation they have. I believe it's important to develop a feeling when you can approach a teammate or leave them alone. Right now we are the beginning of hopefully a long trip which has brought us to Lienz, Austria for a training camp.
Here, everyone is super motivated. On Sunday, one day after the match against Slovakia, the last three players will be stricken off our Euro squad. It will be a difficult decision and everyone hopes that they can be on hand at the adventure in their own country.
Greetings to the Weser!
Do zobaczenia wkrótce (See you soon), Basti
