SV Werder Bremen have extended the expiring contract with defender Sebastian Boenisch by one year until 30 June 2012, as Werder manager Klaus Allofs confirmed Monday afternoon. "With his injuries Sebastian didn't have the chance to showcase himself. We are convinced that he will overcome this difficult phase and work his way back to the team. And with the extension we want to give him the necessary time," said Allofs.
StThe 24-year-old Polish international played just one game in the Bundesliga due to his variety of knee injuries this season, playing the entire match on the second game day against Cologne. Since his transfer to Werder on 1 September 2007, Boenisch has played 51 Bundesliga matches. The U21 European champion from 2009 is currently going through a rehab program at a Dusseldorf clinic. It remains unknown when Boenisch can return to team training.
