Congratulations are in order this Friday for Willi Lemke as Werder's chairman of the supervisory board is celebrating his 65th birthday. Lemke began his time with Bremen as manager in 1981 and was one of the leading figures in Werder's highest times in the 1980s and 1990s. Lemke established a number of economically innovative ideas that later would become standard in the Bundesliga. Bremen's biggest success came with head coaching legend Otto Rehhagel on the sidelines and Lemke pulling the strings at the managerial level - which are still a trademark of his. "Werder Willi" - as he was affectionately known in fan circles - was manager for two Werder league crowns and three German DFB Cup titles and the club's biggest success, the European Cup Winners Cup trophy in 1992.
Lemke invited friends and companions on Friday to a small party at Grothenns Gasthaus, where neither the politicians or sports functionaries will stand in the forefront but instead Willi Lemke the individual.
