The first session of Werder's 12th training camp in Belek is over. The latest edition of the Green-Whites business trip to Turkey began very promising in 2013. The arrival went as planned and the coaches praised the conditions.
"Everything is on hand to work intensively. The pitches are good, the hotel offers everything we need. It's comfortable, has a good fitness area and the running route is okay," said head coach Thomas Schaaf after the first session. He cracked a small smile when looking at the weather forecast. "Even though it's a little chilly right now, looking at the forecast, I only saw sun, sun, sun. That will do us just fine."
There are 29 players in Belek after Florian Hartherz had to call off the trip in the last minute. "It looked like that yesterday already. All of a sudden he didn't feel good after training. We examined him intensively and he had a fever. That usually lasts three days, and then you have to work your way back. It doesn't look like he will make it to Turkey," said Schaaf.
The players will have to head out early on Sunday. The alarm clocks will go off at 7 a.m. and the Green-Whites will have three tough training sessions. But the players confirmed their coach's positive first impression. "The pitch is hard as usual in Turkey but it's in great condition. The grass is like a carpet. The first impression is that the conditions are very good. I haven't seen much of the hotel yet. There wasn't much time between arrival and the first session," said Sebastian Prödl. Keeper Sebastian Mielitz was looking forward to the busy Sunday. "The weather should be great. The conditions are very good for training. And the hotel is good. I looked around the rooms and it's a wonderful, big complex. You can go directly from the room to the pool but it's still a little cool, so I will leave that out for now," said Mielitz. Maybe the sun in the next couple days will change that.
