When SV Werder take on FV Illertissen on Sunday, it won't be a German DFB Cup debut for Fin Bartels. The new Bremen player could possibly play in his 10th cup match after playing previously with FC St. Pauli and Hansa Rostock. But advancing to the second round is the only thing that's important for Bartels.
"I have experienced getting bounced in the first round in past years and can easily do without that this time. We will do everything we can to advance to the second round," said the 27-year-old in an interview. Despite the bad memories of past cup games, Bartels is confident looking forward to the start of the season. "I see us well prepared. We worked a lot. I have never experienced a preparation with as much intensity," said Bartels.
It's therefore no wonder that the Kiel native can't wait for the first match. "The anticipation for the start is high. The eight weeks of preparations were long and intensive. You are happy that you are finally playing for something," said the midfielder. "For me, it's also a special match because it could be my first competitive match for Werder - you sense a certain excitement."
It's an anticipation that couldn't be dampened by the recent losses against Hannover and Leicester. "The defeats in the last test matches came at the right time, better than us losing on Sunday. These little setbacks sharpened our senses," said Werder's new No. 22. Bartels, who feels really at home in Bremen and is becoming more and more open every day, can hardly wait for the first competitive match to start. "You can tell that it's really about to start."
