SV Werder Bremen and midfielder Philipp Bargfrede have agreed to continue their collaboration, signing on for an additional three years until 30 June 2017. Manager Thomas Eichin made the announcement at a Thursday afternoon press conference. The 25-year-old Bargrede's contract was due to expire at the end of the season.

"I am very happy that he will stay here in Bremen. Philipp has a superb character and knows what the current situation is. He knows what's expected of him and wants to help Werder on their course in the coming years. In addition, he is ready to do without certain things," said Eichin.

Head coach Robin Dutt was happy about the news. "Philipp is an exemplary professional. I am more than happy that he is staying here. You could see even before his major injury that he is an excellent player. Philipp knows of the appreciation he has here and feels really welcome in Bremen and with Werder," said Dutt.

The Zeven native has played with Bremen since 2004. In 2009, he helped the team to the German DFB Cup title and reached the UEFA Cup final. Bargfrede has played 99 Bundesliga matches for the Green-Whites, scoring two goals. Werder's No. 44 has also played in the Champions League, appearing in six matches as well as two Champion League qualification contests, six Europa League/UEFA Cup games and nine matches in the German DFB Cup.
