Last November Onur Ayik played in Werder Bremen's last group match in the Champions League against Tottenham Hotspur - the highlight of the 21-year-old's career. In February came the setback as he injured two ligaments in his knee. Nearly six months later, the midfielder is on a good path to returning. WERDER.DE contacted him to find out how the healing process is going.
Hello Onur, where are you at the moment?
I am just on my way to treatment at the Sporthep rehab centre. This afternoon I have to go again. I just want to get fit as quickly as possible. I am at it all day.
Is it true that you even turned down a visit to the cinema to work on your comeback?
Yeah, that's right. I actually wanted to go in the evening with Mehmet Ekici and Leon Balogun to see Harry Potter (laughs). At 7 p.m. I got a text message from the doctor that I should come to the locker room early the next morning. So that's why I didn't go to the movies.
For someone who works so hard on their comeback, you must be satisfied with the process until now, no?
The injury is now five and a half months ago. I can do running drills now for a couple weeks. So I am pretty satisfied. The medical team around our team doctor Dr. Dimanski and physiotherapists Jens Beulke, Sven Plagge, Florian Lauerer and the entire team at Sporthep are doing very good work.
What are your goals?
My goals have not changed. I would like to establish myself into the Bundesliga squad, but the road is still long. First I have to get healthy again, then I can tackle the next goal.
