Werder Bremen may have lost their Bundesliga match over the weekend against Borussia Dortmund 5-1, but it was a special day for Werder talent Levent Aycicek. The youngster made his debut in the Bundesliga, scored a goal and afterwards received the jersey from Nuri Sahin.
"The ball came to me and I was just happy that I stood perfectly and just had to slot the ball in. It was always a dream of mine to score a goal at Werder Stadium. And it's that much greater that it worked out in my first match. I had trained well the last two weeks and am happy about the trust that the coach gave me. I think I was able to pay him back with the goal," said the 19-year, 361-day old Aycicek looking back.
Afterwards, the son of a German mother and Turkish father swapped jerseys with Dortmund's Nuri Sahin. "I asked him after the match if we wanted to swap jerseys. He then came up to me, congratulated me on the goal and wished me all the best," said Aycicek about the encounter with the Turkish international.
About playing the youngster, head coach Robin Dutt said: "I purposely rewarded him with the appearance. He is a positive guy, one who always goes at it. A week ago I said that everyone has a chance to play. And Levent used his chance." Aycicek's teammates also were positive about the Werder youngster's appearance. Raphael Wolf was "thrilled" for Aycicek while Nils Petersen said: "It cannot be underestimated how much quality is coming. That's important for the club."
