Werder supporters picked up a major honour as the Fan Project e.V. was awarded as one six projects from Bremen and Lower Saxony in the nationwide competition "Active for democracy and tolerance 2010" for its initiative "Werder fans against discrimination". Altogether 80 initiatives and projects were selected for their exemplary, worth-emulating and civil society dedication to democracy and tolerance in the competition "Bündnis für Demokratie und Toleranz - gegen Extremismus und Gewalt (BfDT) (Alliance for Democracy and Tolerance - against Extremism and Violence), which was started by the Federal ministries of the Interior and Justice in 2000.
The Fan Project Bremen in collaboration with dedicated and active Werder fans started the "Werder fans against discrimination" group after a group of Werder fans were attacked by right wing extremists because of their anti-racist commitment and some Green-White supporters came to attention through discriminatory statements and actions. The initiative is doing its part to break down racism, anti-Semitism, sex discrimination and homophobia through workshops, an exchange with Israeli football fans and collective choreographies, focusing predominantly on the younger Werder Bremen fans and Bremen football audience. The Fan Project e.V. was awarded with a prize of 3,000 euro.
Public distinction at Bremen City Hall
The winners were honoured and recognised by the Bremen mayor at a public prize ceremony at Bremen City Hall on Monday 7 March 2011.
