"Werder stand for very successful work with young players. I see a big chance here to take the next step in my career." Marko Arnautovic said those words nearly 29 months ago when he transferred to SV Werder. Since then, the Austrian striker has played good at times, and less good at other times. He really has not yet made the big breakthrough. The 84 minutes Arnautovic played last Saturday at home against Mönchengladbach were perhaps his best in an SV Werder jersey. After getting a goal and an assist, Arnautovic spoke of a "very, very important match" - for both the team and for him personally. "The goal and the big victory gave me a lot of confidence. I try to get better every day and get more consistency in my game," said the striker.
Head coach Thomas Schaaf knows that the Austrian international has more potential in him. And he made that known. "This performance makes us hungry to experience more of that," said Schaaf. The coach's order to Arnautovic is clear: show more good performances and score goals. "I hope that I can have a similar match in Fürth, but it will be a tough task and we must remain highly concentrated," said Arnautovic.
While Arnautovic was back on the pitch training Thursday, Niclas Füllkrug, Francois Affolter and Richard Strebinger were not on the training grounds as the trio played Thursday afternoon in the Werder U23 team's 3-2 defeat at Hannover 96 II. Goalkeeper Raphael Wolf also did not participate in training for private reasons.
